Relaxation,
meditation and guided imagery are related forms of mind/body practice
that have deep roots in the many spiritual traditions and in the
world of medicine.
Meditation
involves focusing the mind on a specific object for a specified
period of time. The focus of our mind can vary from silently repeating
a sound (like om), prayer or word, or observing our breath as we
inhale and exhale. It is the focus of our mind on something that
is important in meditation and not the specific thing we choose
to focus on.
Guided
Imagery works by utilizing sensory images, created by
ourselves or someone else, which help us to feel in control of our
lives, bodies and health. Using our various senses, we imagine something
to be as we want it to be. These images help us to create
a self-fulfilling prophecy and bring about desired changes.
Benefits
- These techniques of body/mind medicine are highly effective
because they accomplish several important tasks. They help to promote
healing in the body by producing the relaxation response,
a physiological state discovered by Herbert Benson, MD of Harvard
Medical School. During the relaxation response our heart and respiratory
rates decrease, blood pressure lowers and immune functioning increases.
When
relaxed we enter into a trancelike state. In this state we are more
receptive to sensory messages that mobilize our bodys resources
and responses. We can use this state to our advantage by creating
images that engage all of our senses and help us to bring about
physical, behavioral and emotional changes.
Use
- Because we are all unique beings and respond to different stimuli,
you may find that one relaxation technique works better or is easier
for you to use than another.
The affects
of relaxation, meditation and guided imagery may be felt immediately,
and of course increase with repeated use over time. Experiment with
our various online offerings to see which resonate with you. We
support you in developing and solidifying your own relaxation practice.
There
arent any known adverse affects from the use of these practices.
So sit back, take a deep breathe and RELAX!
